Lymphatic drainage massage is used to stimulate the flow of the lymphatic system. For those of you who don’t know, the lymphatic system can be likened to the circulatory system where veins and arteries carry blood around the body and back to the heart. In the case of lymph, small vessels carry lymph fluid around the body where it is cleaned in the lymph nodes before being returned to the system. Ever remember having swollen glands? This is your lymphatic system trapping invading bacteria in a node in order to kill it.
Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system does not have a pump to push it around the body, therefore it relies on muscular movement. In many people the flow of lymph can become sluggish and not perform its job correctly leaving us overwhelmed with toxins, diseases and lethargy. Good diet, plenty of exercise and lots of water help to flush the system.
The treatment itself consists of very light movements on the surface of the skin. Some people may feel that they are not receiving a proper treatment due to the lightness of touch however, most lymph vessels sit just under the skin so putting pressure on them make the treatment worthless.
You will need to undress for your treatment but only the parts of the body worked on will be exposed. The therapist will start at the neck first. This is because the major lymph nodes here need to be cleared so that all other areas can drain to the neck. The therapist will then decide which other areas will benefit you most. The whole body is not covered in a lymphatic drainage treatment because it would be too taxing on the body so often your treatment will be finished with a relaxing neck and shoulder massage.
You will need to drink plenty of water after your treatment as this will assist in the clearing of the toxins.
Please inform you therapist if you have or have had any of the following conditions:
