Acupressure is thought to be one of the oldest healing traditions in the world and may have even been used before acupuncture. Originating from China, it was discovered that putting pressure on specific areas of the body relieved common ailments.
Acupressure works on the same principle as Acupuncture, only the fingers and thumbs are used to stimulate acupoints along the meridian channels. Meridians are lines which run through the body carrying energy. Meridians run in pairs one either side of the body and will be a mirror image of each other.
Each meridian is linked to an organ. At certain points along the meridians are acupoints, which are stimulated during a treatment. Sometimes meridians can become blocked and stagnated resulting in illness and conditions. Acupressure attempts to restore the free flow of energy around the whole body in order to bring back balance and harmony.
This treatment is good for many conditions and is often used for pain relief.
A good alternative for those who do not like needles! The treatment itself is often used in conjunction with other treatments to enhance their success, however it can be used alone as a full treatment. Altogether it makes for a pleasant relaxing experience.
The therapist will begin by using some relaxing massage techniques similar to those used in Tuina massage. This aids relaxation and rids the body of any tension present. Once you are relaxed the therapist will then stimulate specific points on the body using small circular movements with the fingers or thumbs. Treatment often begins with the client face up and starts at the feet. The client then turns and the therapist will work down the back of the body. It is often done this way in order to follow the direction of the meridians. And finally the face is left until last by which time you should be very relaxed.
As with the Tuina massage you will not need to undress as the treatment is performed through the clothes.
Some acupressure points may be a little tender at times and if this is the case, the therapist will use lighter pressure to avoid any discomfort.
If you require a full acupressure treatment then please telephone your therapist to discuss any conditions you would like treated. This is so we may work out a specific treatment plan tailored to your needs ensuring that you will gain maximum benefit from your treatment and enhance its success.
You will need to inform tour therapist if you have or have had any of the following conditions:
